One of my favorite items to order for breakfast when I visit the Contemporary is the Tillamook Cheddar Cheese Grits, which feature with Nueske’s Smoked Bacon, from The Wave. However, this trip to the resort found me on a bit of a time schedule, so I made my way to Contempo Cafe to grab a quick breakfast. Here, you’ll find the usual suspects on the menu, like the Breakfast and Bounty Platters and Mickey Waffles, as well as a Breakfast Sandwich and Breakfast Burrito. Since I still had some food adventures ahead of me, I decided on something on the lighter side and ordered their Grits, which come with shredded White Cheddar Cheese.
The grits arrive and are very… beige. Despite them being monochromatic, the flavor was a bit less one-note (though not by much). They were served piping hot, and a stir incorporated the cheese into the grits themselves. The grits were a bit on the watery side, and the cheese added a bit of salt and flavor to the otherwise bland dish.
Contempo Cafe’s grits are a far cry from The Wave’s, but they work in a pinch. Even adding a side of bacon to crumble on top of them would put them over the price point of The Wave’s, so if grits are on your breakfast agenda, plan time for a more leisurely and quiet breakfast downstairs.
Here is a look at the breakfast menu (the Additional Items section has changes between the two):
If you’re in a hurry and are looking for something hot to get your day started, the Grits at Contempo Cafe are fine, but I wouldn’t go out of my way for them. Still, I like Contempo Cafe for its convenient location off the monorail, though at times the lines take a while (especially when the Dining Plan gets involved). For a more filling meal, there are several options available, and our experiences have been overall positive, so it’s pretty hard to go wrong.
