It’s been a good year and a half since I last visited Whispering Canyon Cafe for dinner, so after a day at the Magic Kingdom, we were looking for somewhere to go for dinner. I was able to get a last minute reservation for four at the nearby Whispering Canyon Cafe located in the Wilderness Lodge. My family hadn’t been there in ages, and my youngest sister, from what we could recall, had never been. I warned her about the shenanigans that occur at the restaurant, and our server could read we were just there to be spectators.
My sister and I weren’t very hungry, so we stuck to the appetizer menu. We started with the Flash Fried Navajo Bread, a dish I wanted to try on my last visit with Matt. The crisp yet chewy dough is served with Citrus-Honey and Tomato Jam, which bring a nice sweet and slightly acidic bite to the bread. My sister and I both liked it, but my mom tried a piece and wasn’t a fan of it’s chewiness. Although, I think because it had been sitting by the time she tried a piece, it was a bit chewier than when it was fresh.
My sister ordered the Slow-smoked Pulled Pork Spring Rolls which come with a Sweet Chili Dipping Sauce. For $12.49, the portion seems a bit skimpy, but she thought they were good. She offered me a bite to try, and the pork was really smoky. I might have to give these a try at home with some leftover smoked pork we have in the freezer.
For my meal, I opted for the Gold Rush Western Chips, which serves two. Tortilla chips are served with Chili, Cheese Dip, and fresh Salsa. Although it’s been a few years, it reminded me of what is served at the Lodge’s quick service restaurant, Roaring Fork, or what’s on the “PNW” Buffalo Nachos at Territory Lounge (although that chili is made with buffalo). I ended up eating most of it with a fork, and I wouldn’t mind seeing a bowl of chili added to their appetizer menu. The salsa did seem made in house, but I wouldn’t have minded a bit more heat and overall brightness. The cheese dip was not very good, honestly. It tasted floury. I ate a little, but left a lot.
The chips were generic, “store bought” tortilla chips, but at least they were fresh tasting. I had a lot left over, but I was able to box them up along with the remaining salsa and cheese (if she dared) for my sister to take with her. If I were to order this again, I’d see if they could bring me double chili and skip the cheese.
My mom and aunt bother ordered the Build-Your-Own All-You-Care-To-Enjoy Platter, which has had some changes since Matt and I had it. It now features Mixed Greens tossed in an Apple Vinaigrette Dressing (new) and Fresh-baked Cornbread. For protein, they serve Slow-smoked Pork Ribs, Barbecued Pulled Pork, Roasted Chicken, Oak-roasted Beef Strip Loin, and Western-style Sausage. Citrus-crusted Market Fish has been removed. For sides, there are Seasonal Farm Fresh Vegetables, Mashed Yukon Potatoes, Corn on the Cobb, and Cowboy-style Baked Beans. The Dessert Sampler featuring Chocolate Cake, Cheesecake, and Fruit Buckle is no longer included, and desserts are now served a la carte.

Overall, we enjoyed our meal at Whispering Canyon Cafe. I’d like to get over for breakfast again, but I think I’d like to stop in for lunch before I revisit for breakfast. I think the Flash Fried Navajo Bread and Slow-smoked Pulled Pork Spring Rolls were quite good, despite the latter being a tad pricey, and worth ordering again. Skip the Gold Rush Western Chips. If you’re craving nachos, visit Territory Lounge, and if you want to warm up with some chili, visit Roaring Fork. Of course, if you’ve come to the restaurant hungry, you’ll definitely want to save that room for the All-You-Care-To-Enjoy Platter instead!
